shitty old camera

a skateboaring site

Manifesto

shitty old camera is all about using minimal money and the tech you already have to build a personal website, in this case about skateboarding, rather than giving your intellectual labor to a big social media/tech silo.

My goal here is to provide an example of how a skateboarder, or anyone else, can create their own site using a few simple tools and very little (or no) money.

This site uses no content management system. I write the site in a plain text editor built into the hosting site or one one whatever device I'm using, character by character, page by page. It is hosted on neocities.org, where it could be hosted for free. Because I believe in what they're doing, I pay them $5 a month as a supporter.

You may have noticed that this site looks quite antiquated. No fancy formating, No advertising. No social media links. It looks like a site from 1994. This is intentional. Simple formatting means that the site, by the very nature of HTML, adapts to the device it's being displayed on. There's no advertising because I don't think everything someone does should focus on money. There are no social media links because social media is the Devil.

In the coming weeks, in addition to some skateboarding images and videos (shot with the shitty old camera) I'll be posting some articles on different ways to do this -- with whatever you have -- a cellphone or tablet, a cheap Chromebook or beat-up old laptop, or an account at the public library.
